In what is among the largest patent infringement verdicts in U.S. History, jurors in Waco ordered Intel to pay VLSI Technology LLC $2.18 billion for infringing two of its microprocessor patents. The decision calls into question previous assumptions that Waco isn’t a place for large damages cases.

Mr. Gilliland, a seasoned patent litigator who has tried multiple cases in the Waco division of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas, told Bloomberg Law that the case shows that it ultimately depends on the facts of the case. “This is going to convince some people that the conventional wisdom, that it’s not an area that will give big verdicts, is not always true,” he said.
